Hi I’m Gavin. I’m originally from a tiny ex-mining village on the Derbyshire/Yorkshire/Nottinghamshire borders and although I’m technically from the Midlands I say I’m Northern. My Dad was a coal miner and my Mum works in a shop. After completing my A levels and Art Foundation course I moved to London in 2004 to study textiles at Goldsmiths. I had such a great three years at university and was lucky enough to be able to intern at a few galleries whilst studying. After graduating me and a course mate went talent spotting around the country and put on a group show of other recent graduates. This combined with my unpaid work experience gave me the bug for putting on exhibitions and helping artists realise their vision for their work. I’ve worked in galleries as an invigilator right up to opening my own space and I currently work for the Students’ Union at University of the Arts where I manage the spaces available to students and help deliver events. I worked really hard to make my network of contacts and appreciated any help I received. If I can do the same and make it easier to open doors for others then I will. I really look forward to working with Arts Emergency should my application be successful!
