I am a Research Fellow in disability history at Swansea University and recently completed my PhD on deaf education in Wales in the 19th and early 20th centuries. I studied for a BA in History at Bristol University because I was fascinated by social history and the histories of minority groups. While there, I studied courses on diverse topics like protest movements and contemporary Latin America, and eventually did my dissertation on disabled people in Bristol in the 19th century. This led me to Swansea University, who were offering a funded PhD in Disability History, which I completed in 2013. I’ve been incredibly fortunate that the funding was there to study what I want to study, and I am volunteering for Arts Emergency because they are offering the same kind of chances to do exciting, fulfilling and important work in the arts.
