A BA for £9k?

WOULD YOU STUDY A BA FOR £9000?

To get an idea of the scale of the problem facing less wealthy students from 2012, we put this question to graduates online.
The responses were as passionate as they were many.
One thing was clear, it’s a really tough decision and shows the need for a national campaign to support entrants financially, academically and practically.

“I would yeah, played it slightly safe and did a BSc but its done me little good and a BA would have suited me so much more.”

@gembem81 said:

“prob not, can’t afford 9k a year on a nurses salary!”

“The yrs reading, thinking & learning were the happiest of my life. Time to read is a real gift that made me Me!”

“#BAhero My BA wasn’t worth the money, but it got me to an Arts MA that’s practical and creative”

@cathintheattic said:

“No. Family could not support me. 1st person in family to go to uni. Work or voc. Course would have been priority.”

@eyeofthepenguin said:

“I am a better person for going but unless I knew it would increase job opportunities I would be hesitant to pay new fees.”

@nicogoodchild said:

“I still would- French and Spanish have opened doors to the world for me. I’d try and do more work experience though! #BAhero”

@drivelbaby said:

“Not a chance!Had to work full time for a year to get to uni with fees as they were before.Couldn’t handle any more debt!!”

@alannamorgan said:

“no! I loved cultural studies but I couldnt have justified the cost. Makes me sad to think about young people missing out”

@Chavender said:

“No. Starting life with probably 60k of debt is not an alluring proposition”

@RosamondJ said:

“probably not, but I’m not sure that’s a bad thing – my MSc has been far more useful than my BA!”

@JamesCull said:

“definitely not. Wouldn’t have done BA in English and Modern History because I would have had to pay far more than the cost to administer it. Senseless.”

@nerissact said:

“I think I would. Did Theatre Design at NTU. Learnt many essential practical skills not just design. #BAhero”

@helen_twigg said:

“Yes,w/ difficulty.Cuts to funding=department shrinks= less places=cut-throat selection process.Course becomes marketplace.”

@kupocake said:

“I went the year before £3000 fees, I wouldn’t have gone with them. Remember: this was when degrees actually meant employment”

@Mr_Pukeko said:

“as an older student I would be collecting my pension before I’d finish paying a loan of that size. Yes it’s prohibitive.”

@tkingdoll said:

“Absolutely not. I can’t imagine any degree not resulting in a £100k career being worth £9k a year debt.”

@AEBMcN said:

“Hi, I did English Lit then MA Librarianship – honestly if I were a student now I’d do something vocational; Law or Dentistry”

@myates263 said:

“Probably not considering the cost + the jobs market. Graduating in 2009 was really hard, wouldn’t wish it on anyone. #BAhero”

@AdamTempest said:

“undoubtedly yes but the higher fees get the more an arts degree seems like a Faustian pact…”
