Arts Emergency

Sue Scott

Semi retired professor and HE senior manager

Having a feminist mother, doing drama and debating at school and reading New Society as well as reading many other things gave me the confidence to over come having awful o levels and no maths and to go on to do a degree in sociology. I have always found it hard to concentrate on one thing – perhaps not so good for an academic, but it became very useful later when I began to get involved in organising conferences and things and even more so when I wandered into management. I discovered that there were other ways of doing things in Higher Education than the middle class male way and I would like to share this and pass it on. I would not have been successful without a supportive network and would like to help someone to build that support. I have mentored lots of people, but would like to extend this to someone who is right at the beginning of what can be a difficult journey into HE.
