When I saw your tweet I just thought: ‘fantastic!’ I’m deeply committed to so-called ‘widening participation’ but I’m not sure that current strategies reach the right people in the right way. Having left school and home at 16 myself, I’m very aware of the obstacles facing young people from ‘non-traditional backgrounds’ who aspire to university but simply don’t have access to the cultural capital or family/community support structures that help to bring aspiration to fruition.
