Ruby Ticket Reviews: Women, Beware the Devil

In February the Almeida Theatre generously gave our Young Talent tickets to Women, Beware the Devil - a deadly play of treachery and trickery. Ruby Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 1/2

Almeida Theatre - Women, Beware the Devil

I recently saw 'Women, Beware the Devil' at Almeida Theatre and was blown away by the exceptional staging. The centre stage bed was used creatively, lowered and disappeared into the floor, leaving me feeling surprised and impressed. The historical setting of the play, set in 1642, on the brink of the English Civil War, combined with modern storytelling and thought-provoking themes, added depth and complexity to the story. The costumes were imaginative and contributed to the overall atmosphere of the play.

Overall, it was a fantastic production showcasing the best modern theatre with its unique staging, amazing acting, and captivating story.

I was lucky enough to get to bring a friend to this experience, so myself and my fellow classmate from uni went along to get some inspiration for our upcoming devising project. We arrived at the Almeida to tickets in the stalls and were even given a programme!

The show was really good and I loved the set - it had quite a trippy feel to it with a great sense of depth and direction and a real carving of such a static space. The story was not one I’d heard of before and I would never normally opt for something classical myself, so it was nice to step out of my comfort zone. All in all a very nice experience, but I did find the theatre a little difficult to find and the queues for the toilets were crazy - but this is something you get at most theatres.

The story was set in the 17th century during the English Civil War, and the costumes, music, and props made me feel as though I was there at the time. There were definitely funny moments that everyone enjoyed, which is a plus.

Thank you for the Ruby Ticket, Almeida!
